Azure Developer Salary Trends in South Africa

31.4% of South African developers list Microsoft Azure as their primary cloud platform, which puts it in second place after AWS and ahead of Google Cloud Platform. Here, we’ll look at what Azure developers are earning at the junior, mid and senior levels, and how it compares to AWS and GCP developers.

Salaries for entry-level Azure developers start at an average of R23 964 per month, 21.7% more than their average in 2022. At this stage of their careers, they earn 18% more than entry-level Google Cloud developers but 6.3% less than their AWS counterparts.

The average salary for a junior Azure developer quickly rises by 33.5% to R31 998, 10.2% higher than 2022’s average. The gap between junior Azure developers and junior AWS developers has widened to 11.5% and they’ve been overtaken by GCP developers too.

Salary growth for Azure developers continues at the 4-6 year experience mark with a 36.7% increase to an average salary of R43 730. The gap between Azure and AWS developers is widest at this stage of their careers, with AWS developers earning 18.5% more.

Azure developers with 6-10 years of experience can expect the most significant pay rise of their careers. Azure developers with this level of experience see their salaries increase by 40.5%, giving them an average monthly salary of R61 431. Despite this increase, they still trail senior AWS developers by 13.6% and senior GCP developers by 4.4%.

Salaries for senior Azure developers with more than ten years of experience increase by 37.5% to an average of R84 435. As a result, they’ve managed to narrow the gap between themselves and AWS to 8.1%. However, they’ve also seen themselves fall further behind GCP developers as the gap has widened to 5.9%.
