Average entry-level Google Cloud developer salary

The average salary for an entry-level Google Cloud developer starts at R20 301 per month for developers with fewer than two years of experience, 6.3% more than their average in 2022 but 40.8% lower than the average for cloud developers as a whole.

They also earn 20.6% and 15.3% less than the average entry-level AWS and Azure developer, respectively. This makes it one of the lowest paid cloud platforms for entry-level developers in South Africa.

Once they’ve acquired at least two years of experience, a junior Google Cloud developer salary increases by a massive 63.21%, giving them an average monthly salary of R33 129.

By this stage of their carers, the gap between them and the other cloud platforms has narrowed considerably. They now earn just 8.4% less than the average junior AWS developer and 20.7% less than junior cloud developers as a whole. They now also earn 3.5% more than Azure developers with comparable experience.

Google Cloud developers can expect a 28.4% increase once they pass the four year experience mark. This gives intermediate Google Cloud developers an average salary of R42 520.

At this stage, they’ve been overtaken by their Azure counterparts and now earn 2.8% less than intermediate developers working with Microsoft’s cloud platform. They’ve also seen the gap between themselves and mid-level AWS developers rise to 20.7%.

The average salary for a senior Google Cloud developer with more than six years of experience increases by 51.1% and gives them an average salary of R64 252, 12.3% more their average salary in 2022.

As a result of this increase, they’ve re-established their advantage over Azure developers at 4.6%. The gap between themselves and their AWS counterparts has also narrowed to 9.6%.

Salary growth begins to slow once they pass the ten year mark, but they can still look forward to a 39.7% pay rise. This gives senior Google Cloud developers an average salary of R89 758.

At this stage of their careers, they’ve all but closed the gap between themselves and AWS and cloud developers as a whole with comparable experience. They’ve also extended their lead over their Azure counterparts to 6.3%.

Keep in mind

The data in this article is taken from OfferZen’s 2023 State of the Software Developer Nation Report. In this article, ‘salary’ refers to the gross monthly salary (before tax) provided by more than 4500 survey respondents.

Average salaries are single data points and only one part of a bigger story. It’s expected that many respondents may earn significantly more or less than these averages. However, we hope to provide a picture of underlying trends by mapping the average salaries for different experience levels.

Salaries depend on the industry, individual, perks and nature of work. These factors all influence the salary a company will offer to a prospective hire. In addition, most developers are “fluent” in several languages, which will affect the final figures.

It’s also important to remember that every individual’s context is different. Ultimately, salary is a personal conversation that should take place between employee and employer.
