Average entry-level Google Cloud developer salary

The average salary for an entry-level Google Cloud developer starts at R19 096 per month for developers with fewer than two years of experience, 11.6% lower than the average for cloud developers as a whole.

They also earn 11.6% and 3% less than the average entry-level AWS and Azure developer, respectively. This makes it one of the lowest-paid cloud platforms for entry-level developers in South Africa.

Once they’ve acquired at least two years of experience, a junior Google Cloud developer salary increases by 39.1% and gives them an average monthly salary of R26 654.

By this stage of their carers, the gap between them and the other cloud platforms has widened. They now earn 18.6% less than the average junior AWS developer and 8.5% less than Azure developers with comparable experience.

This starts to change at the mid-career level:

Google Cloud developers receive the most significant pay rise of their careers once they pass the four-year experience mark. Intermediate Google Cloud developers can look forward to a massive 67.9% increase for an average salary of R57 500.

By this stage of their careers, they’ve overtaken their Azure counterparts and now earn 9.2% more than intermediate developers working with Microsoft’s cloud platform. They’ve also reduced the gap between themselves and mid-level AWS developers to 8%.

Salary growth for Google cloud developers begins to slow at the senior levels and follows a downward trend among developers regardless of role or tech stack.

That’s not to say that there’s no growth at all.

The average salary for a senior Google Cloud developer with more than six years of experience increases by 28.3% which gives them an average salary of R57 222. As a result of their slowing salary growth, their advantage over Azure developers has narrowed to 2.6%. The gap between themselves and their AWS counterparts has also widened, and they now earn 15.9% less.

Salary growth begins to pick up once they pass the ten-year mark and they can look forward to a 36.7% pay rise. This gives senior Google Cloud developers an average salary of R78 209.

Despite this increase in salary growth, they’ve been overtaken by their Azure counterparts. They now trail senior AWS and Azure developers by 9.2% and 4.5%, respectively.

Keep in mind

The data in this article is taken from OfferZen’s 2022 State of the Software Developer Nation Report. In this article, ‘salary’ refers to the gross monthly salary (before tax) provided by more than 3 200 survey respondents.

Average salaries are single data points and only one part of a bigger story. It’s expected that many respondents may earn significantly more or less than these averages. However, we hope to map underlying trends by mapping the average salaries for different experience levels.

These averages should not be used to estimate what your actual salary will or should be.

Salaries depend on the industry, individual, perks and nature of work. These factors all influence the salary a company will offer to a prospective hire. In addition, most developers are “fluent” in several languages, which will affect the final figures.

It’s also important to remember that every individual’s context is different. Ultimately, salary is a personal conversation that should take place between employee and employer.
