Since 2021, data analytics has become one of the highest-paying industries for senior developers in South Africa. Here we’ll look at the average data analytics developer salary and how they compare with developers working in FinTech, Cloud Tech and Software as a Service (SaaS).

Salaries for entry-level data analytics developers start at an average of R27 339 per month, 42% more than 2022’s average. At this stage of their careers, they earn 4.9% and 21% more than average entry-level FinTech and SaaS developers, respectively. However, they find themselves earning 20.3% less than their Cloud counterparts.

Average salaries for junior data analytics developers increase by 31.1% after they’ve been in the profession for at least two years. This gives them an average monthly salary of R35 843, 43.4% more than they earned in 2022.

By this stage of their careers, they’re earning 3.2% less than their FinTech counterparts and 14.2% less than the average Cloud developer.

Mid-level data analytics developers with at least four years of experience can look forward to an additional 14.8% increase giving them an average salary of R41 155. The gap between them and their cloud developer counterparts is at its widest for those in the four to six years of experience bracket.

Mid-level data analytics developers are now earning 21.1% less than the average mid-level cloud developer. The gap between them and FinTech developers has also widened to 23.9%.

However, salary growth for data analytics developers starts to catch up with these industries at the senior level.

The average senior data analytics developer salary rises by 63.8% for developers with at least six years of experience, giving them an average monthly salary of R67 393, or 15% more than they earned in 2022.

As a result of this increase, they now earn 7.8% more than a senior SaaS developer with comparable experience. They’ve also reduced the gap between them and their FinTech and Cloud Tech counterparts to 3.8% and 4.7% less, respectively.

Data analytics developers with more than ten years of experience can expect an additional 29.7% pay rise giving them an average salary of R87 400, on par with what they were earning in 2022.

Keep in mind

The data in this article is taken from OfferZen’s 2023 State of the Software Developer Nation Report. In this article, ‘salary’ refers to the gross monthly salary (before tax) provided by more than 4500 survey respondents.

Average salaries are single data points and only one part of a bigger story. It’s expected that many respondents may earn significantly more or less than these averages. However, we hope to provide a picture of underlying trends by mapping the average salaries for different experience levels.

Salaries depend on the industry, individual, perks and nature of work. These factors all influence the salary a company will offer to a prospective hire. In addition, most developers are “fluent” in several languages, which will affect the final figures.

It’s also important to remember that every individual’s context is different. Ultimately, salary is a personal conversation that should take place between employee and employer.
