Python is the most popular programming language in the Netherlands and the second most widely used after JavaScript. Here, we’ll look at average Python developer salaries by experience.
Average junior Python developer salary trends
The average junior Python developer salary lies at €43 942 per year for developers with at least two years of experience.
Python developers receive the most significant pay increase of their careers once they pass the four-years experience mark:
Mid-level Python developers in the Netherlands with at least four years of experience can expect a 23.7% pay increase giving them an average annual salary of €54 359.
At this stage of their careers, they earn €3 259 or 6.4% more than the average JavaScript developer.
Why the significant increase? First, developers typically change jobs more frequently at this stage of their careers. This gives them a chance to negotiate a higher market-related salary than the inflationary increases developers can expect if they stay with one company.
Companies hiring developers at these career stages are more inclined to offer what might seem a significant increase because the salary range is still not that high.

Average senior Python developer salary trends
Salary growth for senior Python developers begins to slow once they pass the 6-year mark. However, that’s not to say that there’s no growth at all:
A senior Python developer’s salary increases by 14.4% after they’ve been coding for at least six years. This gives them an average annual salary of €62 206. They can also look forward to a 14.6% increase to an average of €71 290 after coding for at least ten years.
However, the gap between them and their JavaScript counterparts has narrowed to €3 034 or 4.4%.
Why does salary growth slow for senior Python developers? In addition to senior developers generally changing jobs less often than juniors, companies also have to consider salary increases as a developer’s salary level becomes “more expensive”.

Keep in mind
The data in this article is taken from OfferZen’s 2022 Netherlands report: State of the Software Developer Nation. In this article, ‘salary’ refers to the gross annual salary (before tax) provided by 510 survey respondents.
We only included salary insights for experience levels with enough data points to ensure that the amounts are representative of Python developers in the country. That’s why we excluded entry-level developer salaries for this article.
Average salaries are single data points and only one part of a bigger story. Many respondents may earn significantly more or significantly less than these averages. However, we hope to map underlying trends by mapping the average salaries for different experience levels.
These averages should not be used to estimate what your actual salary will or should be.
Salaries are dependent on the company size, industry, individual, perks and nature of work. These factors all influence the salary a company will offer to a prospective hire. In addition, most developers are “fluent” in several languages, which will affect the final figures.
It’s also important to remember that every individual’s context is different. Salary is a personal conversation that should take place between employee and employer.
