Workhappy started in 2016 out of frustration. If you needed a new mouse, the DSE software of the day made you sit through 45 minutes of training that had nothing to do with you, and if you made it to the end of that, the assessor who turned up was too often a glorified furniture salesperson.

It was a bad deal for everybody involved. So we built Ergofy. It is DSE and ergonomic assessment software designed byergonomics experts rather than by software people guessing at it. An employeetakes an adaptive assessment that changes as they answer, so nobody getstrained on a laptop they do not own. Most people come out with guidance thatfixes the problem themselves. When something genuinely needs a human, theplatform escalates it automatically to one of our accredited assessors, and theemployer watches the whole thing on a live compliance dashboard.

DSE compliance has three parts: training, risk assessment and risk management.Ergofy does the first two and more than 90% of the third. That last bit is the hardpart and it is why people buy us. We are also, deliberately, not an AI product, and we do not pretend to be. Thereare real accredited people behind the parts of this that need real people.

Ten years on, we work with over a thousand organisations and have run assessments in more than a hundred countries. Hundreds of thousands of people have used the platform, at some of the best known companies in the UK and beyond. We were the first in the UK to carry out virtual DSE assessments. And we have never sold a single piece of furniture or a single piece of equipment, which is why when we tell a company that someone needs a £1,000 chair, they believe us.

For scale: Gartner puts the number of knowledge workers worldwide at over a billion. Almost every one of them has an employer with a legal duty to look after how they work, and most of those employers are doing very little about it. That is the size of the problem we are pointing at, and we have barely started.

We are a team of 15, growing at around 40% a year, and we have done it organically and profitably. We are a UK business with a base in Durban, where we already have a team of four. So this is not a lone remote hire bolted onto a UK company. There are colleagues in your timezone, possibly in your city, and a company that already knows how to work this way.
