Kawena Exchange offers value remittance services that allows customers to send value cross-border within Africa. Whilst the parent company (Kawena Distributors) has been in operation for a while, Kawena Exchange is a fairly new operation, and is growing rapidly in this burgeoning industry. What we've observed is that the ability to engage with, and offer services to, customers via web and mobile is key to driving growth and success in this industry, and we continue to strive to offer an excellent service to our customers via these key platforms.

Remittance offers a lot of exciting challenges for developers and IT specialists. It touches on many different elements within dev-ops and software development: e-commerce, CRM, security, cloud software, fin-tech, human resources, data analysis and more.

Rebuilding the platform from the ground up has been a challenging and exciting process. We've attempted to follow best-of-breed software development techniques such as domain-driven-design, services-oriented-architecture and agile development, using a test-driven continuous delivery and integration pipe-line which deploys to our cloud-based infrastructure that is both scalable and secure.

We've built the platform with open-source software that allows for new team members to get up and running quickly, and wherever possible to keep logic as simple and efficient as possible. Having run the new platform live for a month now, we have already ironed out many of the dev-ops issues experienced with switching on a new system of this size, and are looking forward to entering the new phase of the software platform, which is building data analysis pipelines (using tools such as DataFlow and BigQuery) to truly become a data-driven organization that can effectively use historic sales and customer data to predict future trends and buying behaviors.

The Role In More Detail

This engineering role is an opportunity for a technologist with a passion for building and developing scalable data-driven applications using open-source software.

So help familiarize the candidate with the code stack, the first area of responsibility would be centered around unit testing. The enhancement of our unit-test suite provides candidates with an excellent way of understanding the code-base and data-model used by our applications, as well as the continuous deployment pipeline we have setup for code fixes and enhancements.

The second area of responsibility is centered around security. We have developed a robust 2FA system for customers and employees, and have adopted best-of-breed security practices with our cloud infrastructure. The candidate is expected to learn and support the authentication, authorization, and security operations in place to ensure seamless operating of our online applications.

The third major area is of responsibility will be to become familiar with our databases and data models. Our application uses both relational and object-based databases, and includes data ingestion pipelines, that are relied on by operations and data analytics teams We are also constantly looking for ways to improve our online-shopping experience through intelligent data analysis and data-driven decision making, and a strong understanding of our data is important to helping achieve this.

We are looking for a new colleague with strong background in Go, Python, NodeJS, or similar back-end language, with strong database skills, and who has the drive and energy to deliver and operate solutions at scale with the highest engineering quality, continuously develop their skills, and work with us on building robust and efficient solutions of the future.
