What we do

We are a family-run HCV underwriting management firm. Our work is not just managing insurance policies but we actually care about the safety and wellbeing of our truck drivers and clients.

We are in the middle of rebuilding our technical operations from the ground up. Paper files, spreadsheets and manual processes are being replaced with systems we design ourselves. The goal is not to catch up to the digital era. It is to out-build the large incumbents in our market, who move slower than we do and are stuck with software they cannot change.

The role

This role sits in the middle of that rebuild. You will build the reports and data pipelines the business runs on, then follow the work into the applications that produce the data.

Expect a bit of everything: SQL and Python against our reporting warehouse, Airflow pipelines, dashboards people open every morning, and enough application work to understand where the numbers come from.

It is a genuinely fun problem. You get to look at how a real business actually works, decide how it should work instead, and then build that.

It also grows from here. Years of claims, policy, vehicle and parts data are already in our warehouse and have barely been touched beyond routine reporting. There is clear room to move into machine learning and advanced analytics, whether that is risk and pricing models, claims fraud signals, parts demand forecasting or vehicle valuation. We are not pretending that work is fully scoped yet. It is the obvious next step once the foundations are in, and the person in this role is the natural person to lead it. Expect the role to grow quickly.

Why work for us

Very little of this exists yet, which is the job and the best part of it.

We also care about what the work is for. We operate in road transport, an industry where the quality of the data directly affects how safely trucks are run and how quickly a driver or an operator is helped after an incident. Better systems mean faster claims, better maintained vehicles, fewer preventable accidents and safer roads for everyone using them. Road transport carries most of what South Africa moves, so improving how it operates is worth doing on its own terms.

• A South African business investing in South African skills. We are building this capability locally rather than buying it in, and we would rather grow someone than import a finished product.
• Real ownership. You will own features end to end, from the question a manager asks to the dashboard that answers it.
• Speed. Work ships in days, not quarters. You see the effect of what you build immediately, and so does the business.
• Direct mentorship. You will work directly under the person who architected the entire platform. That is a conversation every day, not a ticket queue.
• Breadth. SQL, Python, data pipelines, dashboards, and enough application work to understand where the numbers come from. Few roles at this level offer this much surface area.
• A database worth exploring. Years of claims, policy, vehicle and parts data, largely unmined. There is real scope to take this into machine learning and advanced analytics.
• A growth path that is real. The business is growing fast and so is the scope of this role. The person who knows the systems best grows with them.

Our culture

Small, direct and low on ceremony. Decisions get made in a conversation rather than a committee, and you will be part of that conversation from early on.

We care about people understanding the business, not just the code. The best work here comes from someone who has walked the yard, sat with the claims team and understood why the current process is the way it is before proposing to change it.

If you need a mature, fully documented environment to be productive, this will frustrate you. If you like the blank page, you will enjoy it.

Our engineering process

• Everything lives in Git and goes through GitHub, with continuous integration building container images on merge.
• Applications run as Docker stacks, deployed to on-premise servers and to cloud infrastructure, so a change moves from branch to production in a single afternoon.
• Reporting and data movement run on scheduled Airflow pipelines rather than someone remembering to run a script.
• We write documentation as we go, because a small team cannot afford knowledge that lives in one head.
• We take production data seriously. Real customer and policy data is never used for development or testing.
• We use AI tooling heavily as part of the workflow, and expect you to as well.

You do not need to tick every box in the stack above. We care more about how you think about a problem than which tools you have already used.

Our hiring process

1. Application. CV and a short note on why this role interests you. No cover letter theatre required.
2. Introductory call. Around thirty minutes to talk about your background and what we are building.
3. Practical exercise. A small, realistic data task you complete in your own time. It is designed to take a couple of hours, not a weekend, and we pay attention to how you reason rather than whether you found the perfect answer.
4. In-person conversation. A discussion of your exercise, a walk through the business, and time with the person you would be working under.
5. Offer. We move quickly and will tell you where you stand at every stage.
