What we do
Butlers was the first pizza delivery service to launch in South Africa 33 years ago. The product we will be building will replace the 33-year-old systems Butlers has been using to run their business. It will include a number of elements including Online Ordering, Point of Sale, Back Office and Cash Management, Butler Tracking, and more. The long-term vision is to extend the product beyond the initial customer in Butlers, to be a platform for other dark kitchens to use in the management of their business. (Dark kitchens are restaurant operations that do not have a physical restaurant providing their products through delivery and pick-up channels only. In this post-pandemic world there has been an explosion of these businesses to cater to the demand.)

Our Engineering Processes
We believe that the two main influences on our process are firstly eXtreme Programming where we practice TDD, Pairing/mobbing, Continuous Refactoring, Continuous Integration, and Deployment. The other influence is DevOps where we strive for loosely coupled architectures, version control all the things, automate all the things, shared ownership, continuous testing, trunk-based development, and integrated security. We are also influenced by the 12-Factor App approach. We will look to leverage the AWS platform as much as possible.
Our Hiring Process
Our first hire will set the tone for our hiring process. Right now there will be an initial video to assess cultural fit, skill matching, previous experience, values, and goals. This will be followed by a time-boxed two-hour technical test. The final step will be meeting the rest of the team. We aim not to waste your time with multiple interview rounds and we will provide feedback on the conclusion of the process whether or not it is successful. We believe candidates should have insight into our decision-making process and how they may benefit from that feedback.
