Automation & AI Developer (Remote — South Africa)
About Best Byte
Best Byte helps companies organise their digital foundation and accelerate from there with AI and automation. We're part of Fruitful Ventures, an Amsterdam-based venture studio. Alongside client projects, we build our own software products that go to market.
The role
You work independently. You take an idea and turn it into a working product, from database to interface, from local to live. For internal Fruitful Ventures products, you're the sole developer: architecture, frontend, backend, integrations, testing, deployment. For client work you act as an AI & automation engineer, connecting existing systems (CRMs, databases, communication tools) via APIs and building lightweight interfaces on top of their data.
You'll have a technical lead for support, but the ownership is yours.
What you bring
- 4+ years of development experience, in small teams or as a freelancer
- Very solid with Node.js, React, and SQL
- You build with AI agent coding tools like Cursor or Windsurf as part of your daily workflow
- Experience with Vercel, Railway.
- You've built your own applications from the ground up
- Proven rapid product-building: 3–5 projects shipped from concept to live, with demonstrable URLs and clear learnings
- "Ship it" mentality: comfortable launching at ~80% and iterating on real feedback; you focus on usage and results, not polish for its own sake
- Self-sufficient deployment: you take a project from local to a live URL independently (e.g. Vercel)
- Strong ownership, autonomy, and creative problem-solving; resourceful under constraints
- Quick to understand new processes and businesses
- Working understanding of SEO
- University degree, preferably in Computer Science or a related technical field, or equivalent demonstrable experience.
