Role description

We're seeking a Platform Engineer to revolutionize our development and deployment processes. You'll own our dev/stage/prod environments, build robust CI/CD pipelines, and implement comprehensive observability solutions. Your expertise in AWS, Kubernetes, and DevOps practices will be crucial in creating a seamless, secure, and efficient platform for our product teams.

You'll join a small, senior-leaning team with high autonomy and a pragmatic culture. Working remotely from South Africa, you'll collaborate during London hours to build and maintain our infrastructure using cutting-edge technologies like AWS, EKS, Terraform, and GitHub Actions. You'll also play a key role in incident response, developer experience improvement, and cost optimization.

To excel in this role, you should have 6+ years of experience in Platform/DevOps/SRE roles, strong AWS and Kubernetes skills, and a solid background in CI/CD, security, and observability. We're particularly excited about candidates with experience in Apache Airflow, OpenTelemetry, and AWS Bedrock for AI/LLM applications. Join us to make a significant impact on our platform's scalability, reliability, and developer productivity!

# Platform Engineer (AWS/EKS)

Location: Remote (South Africa), working hours aligned to Europe/London (UTC±0/±1)

Employment: 12 month | Reports to: Backend Team Lead

Why this role exists

Our developers can ship features quickly—but the “surrounding parts” (environments, pipelines, infra, observability, incidents) are a bottleneck slowing down our time-to-market for new products and features. You will build and own the platform that makes shipping safe and fast, so engineers aren’t waiting on bespoke help to get dev/stage/prod up, deploy, or debug.

You will:

  • Own environments (dev/stage/prod): provision, standardize, and keep them in parity with Terraform + Helm on AWS/EKS; prevent drift and make creation repeatable.
  • Build CI/CD: design GitHub Actions pipelines (build/test/scan/release), automated deploys, promotion between envs, and rollout strategies (blue/green or canary).
  • Wire the estate: design AWS IAM roles/policies, service-to-service auth, secrets (e.g., SSM/Secrets Manager), and secure networking (VPC, SGs, ingress).
  • Scale & resilience: autoscaling (HPA/Karpenter), resource tuning, capacity planning, backups/restore, disaster readiness.
  • Observability: implement logging, metrics, tracing (e.g., CloudWatch/Prometheus/Grafana/OpenTelemetry), alerting with SLOs; reduce noisy

alerts; actionable runbooks.

  • Incidents: participate in on-call (reasonable rota), lead investigations, drive

postmortems, and fix root causes to lower MTTR.

  • Developer experience: templates, golden paths, internal docs, and self-service tools so

any engineer can spin up services safely.

  • Security & compliance: least-privilege IAM, image scanning, dependency checks, secret

rotation, audit trails.

  • Cost awareness: right-size, spot where appropriate, tagging/chargeback, dashboards.

What you’ve done

  • 6+ years in Platform/DevOps/SRE roles supporting product teams (or backend

engineering with heavy platform ownership).

  • Production experience with AWS, Kubernetes (EKS), Terraform, Helm, GitHub Actions.
  • Built multi-env CI/CD with automated deployments and rollbacks.
  • Strong AWS IAM and networking fundamentals; comfortable linking services via roles and policies.
  • Security hardening in regulated/data-sensitive contexts.
  • Implemented observability end-to-end and tuned alerts; led or supported incident response.
  • Solid scripting/Python for glue and tooling; can read service code (FastAPI/Django/Flask) to debug issues.

Nice to have:

  • Apache Airflow operations at scale; async Python familiarity.
  • OpenTelemetry instrumentation; Prometheus/Grafana stacks.
  • Karpenter/Cluster Autoscaler, ArgoCD, ECR, EKS add-ons, Ingress controllers (ALB/Nginx).
  • Experience with AWS Bedrock, or keen willingness to learn and sharpen up your experience in the self-hosted AI/LLM field.

Our stack

Infra: AWS, EKS (Kubernetes), Terraform, Helm

Pipelines: GitHub + GitHub Actions

Runtime: Python services (FastAPI), PostgreSQL, AWS Bedrock (AI/LLM)

Data Pipelines: Apache Airflow

Observability: CloudWatch + (Prometheus/Grafana/OpenTelemetry)

How we work

  • Remote in South Africa; collaborate during London hours.
  • Small, senior-leaning team; high autonomy; pragmatic standards and code review culture.

What success looks like (first 90–120 days)

  • Golden-path repo template with CI/CD to dev/stage/prod; time-to-first-deploy < 1 day for a new service.
  • Baseline dashboards and alerts; no high-noise alerts; runbooks for top 5 production

issues.

  • Environment creation via Terraform is one command and reproducible; drift checks

scheduled.

  • On-call rotation in place with sensible coverage; MTTR trending down.
