The Digital Garage is a hub of user-centered design and innovation at Old Mutual. It’s a collaborative space where teams from across the organisation can test and apply new methods of design and delivery.
But it’s not just a place. We’re also a people. We’re curious and motivated, focused on driving cultural change within the financial services industry, and with giving customer experience a good name.
The Digital Garage is named as such because it sit in what was once an actual parking garage for Old Mutual employees. While it’s gone through a few evolutions since, it’s now more reflective of a garage in the startup sense:
Long, divider-less desks with which to gather project teams. Café-style booths instead of meeting rooms. And an amphitheatre for weekly town halls. Every detail was considered to promote an open culture, one that’s geared towards meaningful collaboration. There is no cubicle mind-set to be found here.
Seating between 60 – 70 people at any time, with space for up to 120, you’ll find a mix of digital minds from across Old Mutual. Project teams are formed by blending the best skills, usually combining UX designers, graphic designers, developers, project managers, scrum masters, testers and business people.
In-house web and mobile teams are joined by visiting agency partners, united by common projects or to team up for design-thinking sprints.
With about 7 - 10 big projects on-the-go at any given time, there’s plenty to get stuck in to. Each uses the latest technology best suited to the project’s needs, and they all aim to add value to the customer. If you want the challenge to redefine the current South African financial landscape, you’ll want to be a part of what we do.
