WHAT WE DO
Backyard rooms are one of the largest housing sub-sectors in South Africa and make a significant contribution to the provision of rental housing to households whose needs are not addressed by government subsidy programs or the private market. Largely without any government intervention/ support, this sector provides accommodation to households wishing to rent but who cannot afford formal rental accommodation available. 25% of all South Africans now rent and informal rental markets create accommodation opportunities for almost two thirds of all households not able to access formal accommodation.
Our initiative is called Indlu. Its a rental-housing app that connects and facilitates the relationship between township land owners and tenants for their backyard rooms. Land owners that use the Indlu App build a credit score with Indlu allowing them to access the capital required to upgrade their rental rooms into uniquely branded and differentiated rental units and so expand their property portfolio. In other words, we provide township land owners with capital to develop income generating assets in the form of backyard rental accommodation. This capital is solely based on the future income generating potential of these assets and not the individual's current income. These units are then managed through our app and back-end software systems for the duration of the loan to ensure optimal rental collection during this time.

OUR ENGINEERING PROCESSES
We strive to implement close to cutting edge processes in our SDLC, and being a new startup company that has no legacy infrastructure to replace, gives us an advantage to be truly flexible from the start. We try to use well known architectural design patterns in conjunction with new technology stacks, to solve our unique set of problems we face in the informal economy.
OUR HIRING PROCESS
We will typically have an initial interview in order to determine cultural fit and general capability. At the end of the initial interview we might provide the candidate with a small challenge project in order to test skills. A second interview will typically then be scheduled to present the project and meet some of the other team members that might have additional questions.
